Than there were 3 worms.

We've kept it pretty hush hush, hoping he'd have a change of heart...
But Ryan G has decided to leave the band to pursue other musical related things..
We are back to our original line up as a three piece. We're bummed he left. We def loved the four piece. Gave us room for a bigger sound..We're not opposed to getting someone else, but finding the right cool person is always the trouble. Everyone plays something, but we dont wanna settle with someone we're unhappy with.

Moving forth, We're working on two new 7"s followed by another LP.
We're flying out east in April.
And hopefully Japan and/or Europe to follow.

An interview with David Hayden of BOATS! By Tanya Harding

Boats! are a Sacramento power pop punk band, brother band to The Enlows and typically could fit nicely with the Tranzmitors, and I am sure have before on tour but here and now they are coming to town, right at the start of PUNK WEEK playing with our punk princes and princesses The Jolts and White Lung on May the 15th at the New Brandiz.

Boats! are fresh faced young lads and I met David before at the Alf House when he played there with his other band the sugary swweeeeet Enlows, so I am going to ask him a few questions....

TH: How old are you now, David, and what do you want to be when you grow up? How old is Boats! as a band?

DH: I’m 23 years old. I have no clue what I wanna be when I grow up. When are you considered grown up? Right now, all I have on my plate is touring, booking a music venue here in Sacramento and bar-tending during the day...Definitely, not what I want to do all my life. The band part I wouldn't mind so much, but even being on tour all the time can be exhausting.

TH: What's the difference in sound between your two bands? And which one do you like better to tour with?

DH: Boats! is more of a punkish band. More Clorox girls/The Briefs influenced. Our musical ability is less since Matt (guitar/vocals) is mainly a drummer - an excellent one at that. So, guitar solos are usually him faking it, and the chords, well they are all power chords lol. The Enlows have more of that younger Lookout! Records Queers/Screeching Weasel sound.

TH: Would you ever move to Vancouver?? In other words, just tell us that it sucks here and tell us how there is a venue on every corner and an audience any day of the week in Sacramento.

DH: I'd way, way love to live in Vancouver if it wasn't so cold. Or any where in the north west to be honest. We do better up north than anywhere else. Sacramento isn't the best place for a music scene. Kids here are very slow at coming out and supporting. It’s really based on favouritism. We used to play several times a month, which less and less kids came out to. Now we're a once a month or every other month band in Sacramento. We've had nothing but good experiences in Vancouver. Who knows though, maybe we've just played with the right bands every time we've come up and we're secretly disliked – lol!

TH: Have you ever water-skiied? Or why call yourself Boats! besides the ‘making waves’ reference.

DH: I have indeed water-skiied, I was pretty damn decent. My mom’s ex-husband Kyle Kidder (Yes, "KIDDER" is real last name) owned a boat. In spite of him being an asshole, I'd go every now and then. Took me a while to get up on the skis, but once I did, I was scared of falling down. Though, the name Boats! came from having no other ideas for a name, we wanted something simple. Our friend Jaz Brown (formerly Helper Monkeys) suggested it, we went with it. It’s a really a dumb name, but who ever really likes their band’s name? Secretly, I wouldn't mind having our name be "Tranzmitors" but that’s kinda taken now isn't it, lol?

TH: Do you guys smoke a lot of weed in Sacramento?

DH: Matt and I are "EDGE" – lol - not really, but neither of us do drugs. He drinks maybe one beer and that’s it. I drink none, as I can’t hold much, one beer gets me wasted, and one time while in San Francisco playing with Seattle's "THE GIRLS"
I shit my pants, though, no do do was in my pants? It was a wild night. Jef though is the pot smoker of the band. Let’s just say he's the butt of the joke for the band! "SMOKE WEED EVERYDAY!"

TH: How hard is it to cross the border for you?

DH: Last time when The Enlows came up, it was a big ordeal. They stopped us, searched us, questioned us. I ended up admitting we were a band coming to play a show. Since we did an early house show, that was considered non-profit and ‘cause of my honesty, they let us in. If we had told them we were playing The Rickshaw after, I think we'd have been turned around. Hopefully, hopefully this time around, we don’t get stopped.

TH: What bands could you give a shout out to right now that you like and why?
DH: Haha I’m bad at "Shouting out" as I am really tiny and my vocal chords don’t allow me to "Shout" too loud but I'd have to holla holla to Tranzmitors, Zip Guns, Prima Donna, Clorox Girls, Autistic Youth, Rough Kids, Greatest Hits, The Pranks, Boss Martians and The Cute Lepers, just ‘cause all the bands are super rad, great people and always are super accommodating to us with sharing gear/playing the shows and promoting them with/for us! Kind of a silly punk rock family to some extent! ;p

BOATS!
coming to a major lame city near you!

By Sebastian Buzzalino

Despite its heyday being long gone, 924 Gilman is still the holiest of destinations for aspiring punk bands in Southern California. At its height in the late '80s and early '90s, the legendary all-ages venue saw bands like Operation Ivy, Green Day and Bad Religion grace its stage. While the venue may no longer have the same importance today, the weight of history still remains. Not for nothing, then, that when David Hayden, bassist for Sacramento, CA, powerpop/punk band Boats!, first played there, he got a nose bleed.

"Playing Gilman for the first time was super outrageously exciting. I got a bloody nose just based off being so anxious to be playing the Gilman where Green Day used to always play. It just had that feeling of them being there in the air," enthuses Hayden, "though it's not something you openly speak about at the Gilman (because of their policy to not book major-label acts). Though times have changed and faces and bands are all new, the scene and shows are still rad there."

But, being based in Southern California does not automatically mean that a pop punk group like Boats! will have an easy time recruiting a fan base. If anything, the scene is saturated, making it difficult for the almost three-year-old band to "sell out," as is so often complained about a scene that saw a huge commercial rise in the late '90s and early '00s.

"At least for Sacramento, if you play on a weekday, forget it. You're lucky if 5-10 kids show up," he explains. "Weekends are good, if there aren't a billion other good shows in Sacramento. Sacramento is a pretty favouritism kind of town: the kids follow the main punk bands, and if you have a show the same night as them, it's pretty much practice, which is why we prefer touring. It's just a whole lot more fun and exciting.

"We love coming to Canada," he continues, speaking of their upcoming west coast tour that will see them wind their way up in to the Pacific Northwest before coming to Alberta. "It's very exciting being in Canada. The people are way super nice and super supportive. All of the northwest is really good for us. Just from always touring up that way with Boats! and previous bands, it's a win/win: our shows have rarely ever had a bad turnout up there."

Hayden's bubbly excitement comes through in equal amounts regardless of the medium: over email, his responses are written in a flurry, as if he cannot wait to talk about Boats! or any other topic. His band's music, similarly, is a two-minute blast of powerpop/punk that exudes a young and almost innocent energy. It is the sound of possibility, of fun, of playing music because it is the best way to go through life. Their first video, for "My Mother Was Right," an impromptu project filmed entirely on an iPod Nano, is a perfect example of Boats!'s personality.

"It's very important we come off as a fun band. We don't want to come off as a cheesy band like blink-182 and talk about poopy diapers or something stupid like that. We just like to have fun and joke around, but we do mean business when it comes to releasing records and touring."

For now, though, there is no danger of Boats! becoming the next blink-182. While the young three-piece does spend most of their time touring and increasing their fan base, they still face significant challenges, especially in "some major lame cities," as Hayden puts it. Their next major goal, then, is to just hop on to bills with bigger bands and to play bigger venues, polishing their live chops. Until then, though, they will continue to wish, as their MySpace puts it, to tour with Hall and Oates.

you've been so good to me.

Getting ready for tour, and ready to record Thursday. we're recording 3 brand new songs and 1 old one for a new 7" that will be released on Modern Action records (Members of the briefs/The Bodies) label. We're looking to get it done A.sap! no bullshit, Record all the music/vocals in one day. And finish the mixing within the week. Our Lp has also been sent to the pressing plant. We wont have it for our Canada tour, but in August we're going out on tour with The enlows to support both our full lengths. As for our 10" not much as been heard about it...Rottentone has had it for awhile, They've had some pressing problems? Either way, It's not out, nor do we know if it'll ever be. It would def be a rad release to have on a new up coming label, but our main priority, is new material...Later on In the fall, No front teeth will do the euro pressing of "totally jawesome"

things are looking up for us. We're hoping to get picked up by a booking agent. Yes, we're sorta tired of doing all the bookings ourselves, and would love to just be an opening support band for bigger bands. So Hopefully these new releases will get us more exposure. We're also not playing Sacramento for a long time After September. We got 3 more local shows, and Thats it for us. We love Sacramento, but We can only do so much in one town. Feel like we've bored Sacramento, So time to disappear for awhile till we become fresh to everyone here.

Matt's been going to college, David and Jef have been doing Enlows (as much as we can) And David is constantly busy with Shire Road club...But be on the look out for us, and keep buying our up coming new released! hope to see you on tour! ;p

Update on BOATS! life....

Whats been new with Boats!? Seems like we're not doing so much these days...
Jeff is now officially in David's other Band The enlows. His 1st official show is This Thursday
@ Shire road club (5525 auburn blvd) w/Voodoo Glow Skulls.
We've finished guitars and vocals this past week. Now Just mixing it down to a "T"
before sending it off to Nate @ May cause dizziness records.
Art has been a bitch of a time. None of us have ideas, or can committee to anything.
But we're bout to just run wild and go with whatever.
We really wanted the full length out A.sap!

We're going on a small week tour up to Canada in May.
These short tours in rental cars have seemed way way more worth it.
All the shows are normally really good, and we don't come back with butterflies in our pockets...

We played with Angry Samoans Last week...Sorta. I had major Bass troubles, even when I got another bass, My cable (I had a swirly coil cable) kept unplugging. I popped a cute girl in the face...We had 12 songs on our set list, played probably 1 full song. Thats how much bullshit and troubles we had...totally sucked, totally got super amped, to play super horribly shitty!

We have some rad shows coming up with such bands: Dwarves, Tranzmitors, M.o.t.o, Sharp objects ect

We have a 10" coming out. its our 1st self titled cd...just on Vinyl. The enlows have a split cassette tape with the poonteens (davis) if you'd like to get one, $3 send payment to David11486@yahoo.com send money as a gift!

Anyway, stay tuned, we got records coming out, and hope everyone picks their copies up! :p

I'd Be So Pleased.

We left on our Texas tour around noonish. It was a rainy day, we got an impala Rental car. Not The most comfy car we've had. They wanted $1,000 for the ford flex since its more in demand around winter time/holidays...So we settled for a cheap ass car...With No insurance, or underage fees. We got to La early...Of course, being first day of tour, I start freaking out and having a panic attack. Already contemplating canceling tour and going home. We've been gone for a max of 5hrs, if that! We stayed at my friend Alisha's cute apartment in Echo Park. Just a few miles away from The venue. We played project infest 1st night. It was located in South Central...Probably the only white people in the area, and they were all punks...It took awhile for the bands to show up...which made me stress more, without the bands, we'd have had no gear. Since it was the 1st day of the new year, I didn't know if we'd have a suck show or a rad show...Than a shit load of people started coming out, the band showed up...one or two might have not shown up, but we had more then plenty enough bands. The sound wasn't the best, the crowd was 50/50 with being crazy/mellow. There was a nice bon fire outside...Kids were moshing in rolling chairs, went back to Alisha's ate some soup called it a night.

San Diego: Got in Around 3ish...Went Straight my good friend Rhonda's house. Her and I caught up a little since I hadn't seen her since 7th grade. she recommended a good Vegan restaurant, we ate good and than her and I went to 24hr fitness. I was a pussy, and she totally out worked me..I was done within an hour, and she wanted to keep going. After that we went to the show. The show went over really well. once again, was being pestimistic, thinking the show would suck since we only had good shows there when Prima Donna played them. Junglefever (Ex-wild weekend) Was outrageously awesome. During our set, I pointed out how the bass played said I was cute when we played with them in San francisco with The girls, And I mention how I got so drunk I shit myself, without even really shitting myself...awkward.

Phix: We stopped at Apples bee's half way to Phix. They didnt have any veggie burgers so we didn't eat good in the neighborhood so we went straight to chilli's after ordering a free sprite. Matt and I got black bean burgers and it turned out to be the main choice of food for the whole tour. We went close to everyday. It felt like the drive was forever. Went to Nate's 1st (May cause dizziness records) Met him for the 1st time after already putting two 7inches out on his label. Kinda nervous, wasnt sure how it was gonna turn out. But he was way rad and had an awesome pad with cute dogs! The show was so/so we had some gear trouble...My bass kept cutting out, and Matt played with butter fingers. Punk bunny hecka showed us up + they had guy on guy dick sucking action when they closed their set! Afterwards we watched "the hangover" at nates. It was actually way funny! I figured it'd be a total lame Bro flick like American Pie....The next day, we spent recording "my mother was right" music video...I dont know how the idea came about, and I felt like a total idiot making this stupid video at nates house...He walked beside us playing the ipod so we can sync play to the song..whatever.

Tucson: we played in a fuckin JUNK YARD!!! The show got canceled, we moved it last minute to this place called "The hangart" the building was to old and had a basement in it...so The dude doesnt do shows in it, scared of the floors caving in...So we played outside in what was a total junk yard. All kinds of shit around us...a good 60 kids came out on a Monday night, we had major fun and we stayed at our 1st couchsurfing house of the tour. We stayed with Brenda...she had an awesome house, furnished basement! Foosball table, Ping pong table, x-box and tons of food! she worked at 7am and didn't kick us out...we took our time, ate lunch and off to New Mexico.
Photobucket

Las Cruces Nm: got a speeding ticket. going 90 in a 70mile zone. The couchsurfer we we're staying with, had no heater, the room had one single mattress, a futon frame, with no futon...and he answered the door in "kiss my Irish ass" pj's...smoking what jef said was "bad weed"...It was super awkward, we def didnt want to stay here...Matt Han's and I left Jef while he smoked and was in the house alone with this stoner dude and his friends. He finally got the hint we we're ditching the place...We went to the club, met the owner, she was cool and said we could stay in the venue over night.... All the bands were super awkward bout letting us use their shitty gear...They all knew ahead of time we we're gonna use their gear, but all of the bands gave us the run around, we had to talk to like 8347834 band members to just get drums, bass and guitar amp...They tried dooping us last...After we played everyone was cool and less awkward..But than the girl goes on about how she got a "disturbing phone call" and her friend said the cops we're keeping an Eye on the place...so we could No longer stay there...whateve, I smelt bullshit on that...We ended up staying at The Marriot. Fuck it was so nice..It was cheap! Only $90 two king size beds, flat screen tv. Pullout couch bed and continental breakfast! The waffles we're in the shape of Texas!
Photobucket

San Antonio tx: The drive always fuckin sucks. We hit a gas station that was a single person bathroom, but it totally had two toilets next to each other with no stalls! so matt and I pee'd together...We got to my friend Devan's apartment...She bought Little heaters so we'd be warm, but than my friend Amber (who has a super rich nice house) said we could stay at her place..I felt bad, but we ended up going to Ambers...The show got moved, we found out last minute, but it was only moved next door. A good amount of people came out! I was suprised! SA always sucked for us, this show was rad! went back to Ambers and watched "law man"...So tight

Houston tx: Got to John from Teenage kicks house played with his Pug "yoa!" and off to chillis..He hooked matt and I up with Their full length and 7inch! BOATS! even got a thank you in them! tight...It was freezing balls in houston! 19 degrees outside! fuck! so cold. The show was alright, we shoulda played 1st, most the cool punk kids took off after the 1st band even though they were in the band...We also got to see a Beatles cover band down the road before hand! so tight.

Austin tx: We stayed at Matt's Dads house. He broke a string the night before, so Just matt and I went to guitar center and starbucks together. Our little date...Matt's dad was cooking for us. We told him we're vegetarian. So he asked, "so you don't eat meat?....can you have chicken noodle soup?"....I was pretty sketched on dinner after that, but it was good...We played a pizza place called the parlor. We go free pizza, so that also made up for our dinner...We got stuck playing last (what the fuck local bands! u dont stick a small touring band last!!!!!!...we know u dont wanna play last when u come to sac and on tour! it fuckin blows!!!) the show had to be over by 11 and the 2nd band didnt end till like 11:15...the owner was cool and let us play. we kept it short and the show ended up super fun!

Denton tx: I think we lost touch with the super cool bands of denton, or they just dont like us...We couldnt get Teenage cool kids or any rad bands to play with us...We drive up, and last minute the dude calls me and says the two local bands we got had to cancel! I call more bullshit on that! how do you wait till the last hour to tell us you guys cant play? It was a total waste of time, and gas to drive to denton to "NOT" play We had a place to stay, it was semi awkward, but least we had somewhere warm to stay! but it was a saturday!! prime night for a show and the venue was pissed! but thats what happend when you dont travel with gear,,In the morning this nice dude paco (who reminds me of Billy Bob thorton) when he talked bought a package deal from us and had breakfast. So it wasnt a total waste.

Lubbock tx: Another rad show, with another rad place to snooze.
Didn't go to the buddy holly grave or museum.

Albuquerque nm: cold as shit again, Huge venue with a huge stage and a huge backdrop banner and a crazy owner who wanted to book us a show in San Francisco with Social concern and final summation...call me crazy, but find it weird this guy is trying to set us up with a SF show with bands from our home town...I dont see it being a good show lol Couchsurfed, got good food late at night, and slept! we we're kicked out by 8pm!

Flagsfaff: we're getting closer to California, we're getting a little more lazy..ate chilli's played at studio 111. The show was 50/50 had to deal with one complicated guy who kept bugging me bout getting paid and than a band who was trying to stick us last, using their guitar player is sick as an excuse. Then they said they couldnt play, than in middle of our set they decided they we're gonna play...It was totally lame...But they were a totally rad fuckin band! it'd be siked on em coming to Sac...way good drummer!
Photobucket

La: Matt wanted to drive home that night, so we drove all day, waited in the car for 2-3hrs for the show to start. Got $2 margaritas with Rough Kids and than played...The show was super rad in a super small record store/art space...we watched 2 rough kids songs...fuck they are so good! And there was no pb&j fights! a major plus in the show!
Photobucket
Photobucket

SF: Jef like an idiot...goes to TACO bell when he gets home...we ate like kings all tour and he eats TB the 1st chance he gets! who throws up before leaving for the BAY? Jef does! so silly! The show wasnt packed, kinda a disappointment...But Sharp objects (dan of the briefs and members of the bodies) played...fuck! so good, our new fave band for sure! Kirk showed up as did punk rock joel and Spike (re-volts/Me 1st and the gimmie gimmie's) came out...so it was a fun show all and all...
Photobucket
Photobucket
Sac: tour return home show/Grand opening for shire road club w/Phenomenauts, Sharp objects! secretions & Baby! was worried no one was coming out for our return home, but more importantly the opening of the new all ages club! but than people showed up! over 200 paid, we had a super fun show, Sharp objects we're the best band (least i thought) that night. everyone was rad, and it reminded me, how though I sometimes complain, I do love Sacramento's music scene. It was rad seeing a shit load of our friends!
