December 2011 we recorded with Ted Angel (Mr. T Experience)
and recorded our 3rd LP "Smoking is Cool"
Joey of Emily's Army had spoke to us, and said Adeline Records was interested
in putting us out. So we've been sitting on the record since December.

Patrick and Charles both quit Boats!
We tried a few drummers, and were having horrible luck.
BOATS! was looking about over-
We saw our friend Adam drumming in his new band Urban wolves. (check em out)
We knew instantly we had to get him on board.
We asked him, and he said YES!

We started playing shows, with Chixdiggit and Vibrators. Now we are best friends!
He has the most positive attitude ever, and we couldn't be more happy with him in the band.
If he quit, I'd seriously kill myself, and post a sad video on YouTube before doing it.

We've been searching a new label to put out our new LP.
May Cause Dizziness is taking a short break.
We've contact Modern Action Records, and so far, they are also interested.
So now we're waiting on a green light from either Adeline and/or Modern Action.
We love both labels, and would be thrilled to be put out by either of the two.

We have planned a East Coast tour for Spring.
Dates have yet to be booked, as it is still far out in advance to get solid dates booked-
but we'll be there! If anyone wants to help us book some shows, or send some contact info please do!
Here are the dates and cities!
Jeff Melendez has quit the band, to pursue a life as a chef. Our good friend Patrick Shelly has filled/out grew Jeff's shoes. He fits like a perfect glove. We also added Charles Albright (he's on drugs) on 2nd guitar. We just got wind, he'll be quitting the band, as he is stressed out being in about 5 other bands, and having to teach math to a bunch of college students, who prefer to waste his time, and text during his class.

Matt has tied the knot with his lady, and just enjoyed a honeymoon in Europe.
Meanwhile, back at home, David just had a new born sister. He's playing the father /really old brother Role.

Once Matt returned from his Honeymoon, we began working on our 3rd LP "Hall & Boats!" Or "Hummerz." The name of the LP has yet to be decided.

Ted Angel (of Mr. T Experience, The Mallrats, Bright Faces, Problem girls) is recording/Producing/playing a solo on one of the tunes. We plan to have it released shortly on May Cause dizziness Records, before we start touring again. Matt also doesn't have enough time saved up, to be going tour.

BOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-6524457477750035832011-03-14T22:01:00.000-07:002011-03-14T22:05:45.063-07:003 worms in the big apple. This weekend we're playing In La @ The Redwood bar with Underground Rail Road To CandyLand. Saturday @ The Tin can in San Diego w/JungleFever..After that, we've got two local shows in Sacramento before we fly out to the east coast for a short 10 day east coast tour.

March 27th The Hub with The booze, the bitters, Devila 666
April 6 The Boardwalk w/Peelander Z & The Secretions

We've got a new 7" in the works. Took some time to decide if we we're happy on the recordings or not...Took some time to get some art work in the works, But I think we're finally there...All that we need to do is move a little faster and get it all to Nate at May cause Dizziness Records and get production underway.

When we get back from Tour, we're gonna just do some weekend shows and work on a new LP...We also have a new band called, "TEEF" which Jef melendez fronts and Matt play drums..We'll probably start doing more with that once we get home, and finally get the "TEEF" 7" pressed.

Thats the news for now.BOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-61179715345865440602010-12-30T12:35:00.000-08:002010-12-30T12:38:46.269-08:00Than there were 3 worms. We've kept it pretty hush hush, hoping he'd have a change of heart...
But Ryan G has decided to leave the band to pursue other musical related things..
We are back to our original line up as a three piece. We're bummed he left. We def loved the four piece. Gave us room for a bigger sound..We're not opposed to getting someone else, but finding the right cool person is always the trouble. Everyone plays something, but we dont wanna settle with someone we're unhappy with.

Moving forth, We're working on two new 7"s followed by another LP.
We're flying out east in April.
And hopefully Japan and/or Europe to follow.BOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-80060628521845274552010-11-29T16:00:00.000-08:002010-11-29T16:06:42.749-08:00EAST COAST TOUR 2011
We're leaving on a jet plane for the east coast in April!!! By Tanya Harding

Boats! are a Sacramento power pop punk band, brother band to The Enlows and typically could fit nicely with the Tranzmitors, and I am sure have before on tour but here and now they are coming to town, right at the start of PUNK WEEK playing with our punk princes and princesses The Jolts and White Lung on May the 15th at the New Brandiz.

Boats! are fresh faced young lads and I met David before at the Alf House when he played there with his other band the sugary swweeeeet Enlows, so I am going to ask him a few questions....

TH: How old are you now, David, and what do you want to be when you grow up? How old is Boats! as a band?

DH: I’m 23 years old. I have no clue what I wanna be when I grow up. When are you considered grown up? Right now, all I have on my plate is touring, booking a music venue here in Sacramento and bar-tending during the day...Definitely, not what I want to do all my life. The band part I wouldn't mind so much, but even being on tour all the time can be exhausting.

TH: What's the difference in sound between your two bands? And which one do you like better to tour with?

DH: Boats! is more of a punkish band. More Clorox girls/The Briefs influenced. Our musical ability is less since Matt (guitar/vocals) is mainly a drummer - an excellent one at that. So, guitar solos are usually him faking it, and the chords, well they are all power chords lol. The Enlows have more of that younger Lookout! Records Queers/Screeching Weasel sound.

TH: Would you ever move to Vancouver?? In other words, just tell us that it sucks here and tell us how there is a venue on every corner and an audience any day of the week in Sacramento.

DH: I'd way, way love to live in Vancouver if it wasn't so cold. Or any where in the north west to be honest. We do better up north than anywhere else. Sacramento isn't the best place for a music scene. Kids here are very slow at coming out and supporting. It’s really based on favouritism. We used to play several times a month, which less and less kids came out to. Now we're a once a month or every other month band in Sacramento. We've had nothing but good experiences in Vancouver. Who knows though, maybe we've just played with the right bands every time we've come up and we're secretly disliked – lol!

TH: Have you ever water-skiied? Or why call yourself Boats! besides the ‘making waves’ reference.

DH: I have indeed water-skiied, I was pretty damn decent. My mom’s ex-husband Kyle Kidder (Yes, "KIDDER" is real last name) owned a boat. In spite of him being an asshole, I'd go every now and then. Took me a while to get up on the skis, but once I did, I was scared of falling down. Though, the name Boats! came from having no other ideas for a name, we wanted something simple. Our friend Jaz Brown (formerly Helper Monkeys) suggested it, we went with it. It’s a really a dumb name, but who ever really likes their band’s name? Secretly, I wouldn't mind having our name be "Tranzmitors" but that’s kinda taken now isn't it, lol?

TH: Do you guys smoke a lot of weed in Sacramento?

DH: Matt and I are "EDGE" – lol - not really, but neither of us do drugs. He drinks maybe one beer and that’s it. I drink none, as I can’t hold much, one beer gets me wasted, and one time while in San Francisco playing with Seattle's "THE GIRLS"
I shit my pants, though, no do do was in my pants? It was a wild night. Jef though is the pot smoker of the band. Let’s just say he's the butt of the joke for the band! "SMOKE WEED EVERYDAY!"

TH: How hard is it to cross the border for you?

DH: Last time when The Enlows came up, it was a big ordeal. They stopped us, searched us, questioned us. I ended up admitting we were a band coming to play a show. Since we did an early house show, that was considered non-profit and ‘cause of my honesty, they let us in. If we had told them we were playing The Rickshaw after, I think we'd have been turned around. Hopefully, hopefully this time around, we don’t get stopped.

TH: What bands could you give a shout out to right now that you like and why?
DH: Haha I’m bad at "Shouting out" as I am really tiny and my vocal chords don’t allow me to "Shout" too loud but I'd have to holla holla to Tranzmitors, Zip Guns, Prima Donna, Clorox Girls, Autistic Youth, Rough Kids, Greatest Hits, The Pranks, Boss Martians and The Cute Lepers, just ‘cause all the bands are super rad, great people and always are super accommodating to us with sharing gear/playing the shows and promoting them with/for us! Kind of a silly punk rock family to some extent! ;p

LINK TO ARTICLE: HERE

BOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-87738359451820227562010-05-18T17:54:00.000-07:002010-05-18T17:57:24.643-07:00BeatRoute Magazine Article

BOATS!
coming to a major lame city near you!

By Sebastian Buzzalino

Despite its heyday being long gone, 924 Gilman is still the holiest of destinations for aspiring punk bands in Southern California. At its height in the late '80s and early '90s, the legendary all-ages venue saw bands like Operation Ivy, Green Day and Bad Religion grace its stage. While the venue may no longer have the same importance today, the weight of history still remains. Not for nothing, then, that when David Hayden, bassist for Sacramento, CA, powerpop/punk band Boats!, first played there, he got a nose bleed.

"Playing Gilman for the first time was super outrageously exciting. I got a bloody nose just based off being so anxious to be playing the Gilman where Green Day used to always play. It just had that feeling of them being there in the air," enthuses Hayden, "though it's not something you openly speak about at the Gilman (because of their policy to not book major-label acts). Though times have changed and faces and bands are all new, the scene and shows are still rad there."

But, being based in Southern California does not automatically mean that a pop punk group like Boats! will have an easy time recruiting a fan base. If anything, the scene is saturated, making it difficult for the almost three-year-old band to "sell out," as is so often complained about a scene that saw a huge commercial rise in the late '90s and early '00s.

"At least for Sacramento, if you play on a weekday, forget it. You're lucky if 5-10 kids show up," he explains. "Weekends are good, if there aren't a billion other good shows in Sacramento. Sacramento is a pretty favouritism kind of town: the kids follow the main punk bands, and if you have a show the same night as them, it's pretty much practice, which is why we prefer touring. It's just a whole lot more fun and exciting.

"We love coming to Canada," he continues, speaking of their upcoming west coast tour that will see them wind their way up in to the Pacific Northwest before coming to Alberta. "It's very exciting being in Canada. The people are way super nice and super supportive. All of the northwest is really good for us. Just from always touring up that way with Boats! and previous bands, it's a win/win: our shows have rarely ever had a bad turnout up there."

Hayden's bubbly excitement comes through in equal amounts regardless of the medium: over email, his responses are written in a flurry, as if he cannot wait to talk about Boats! or any other topic. His band's music, similarly, is a two-minute blast of powerpop/punk that exudes a young and almost innocent energy. It is the sound of possibility, of fun, of playing music because it is the best way to go through life. Their first video, for "My Mother Was Right," an impromptu project filmed entirely on an iPod Nano, is a perfect example of Boats!'s personality.

"It's very important we come off as a fun band. We don't want to come off as a cheesy band like blink-182 and talk about poopy diapers or something stupid like that. We just like to have fun and joke around, but we do mean business when it comes to releasing records and touring."

For now, though, there is no danger of Boats! becoming the next blink-182. While the young three-piece does spend most of their time touring and increasing their fan base, they still face significant challenges, especially in "some major lame cities," as Hayden puts it. Their next major goal, then, is to just hop on to bills with bigger bands and to play bigger venues, polishing their live chops. Until then, though, they will continue to wish, as their MySpace puts it, to tour with Hall and Oates.

LINK TO ARTICLE: HEREBOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-3135647270497345212010-04-27T23:06:00.000-07:002010-04-27T23:13:27.725-07:00you've been so good to me.Getting ready for tour, and ready to record Thursday. we're recording 3 brand new songs and 1 old one for a new 7" that will be released on Modern Action records (Members of the briefs/The Bodies) label. We're looking to get it done A.sap! no bullshit, Record all the music/vocals in one day. And finish the mixing within the week. Our Lp has also been sent to the pressing plant. We wont have it for our Canada tour, but in August we're going out on tour with The enlows to support both our full lengths. As for our 10" not much as been heard about it...Rottentone has had it for awhile, They've had some pressing problems? Either way, It's not out, nor do we know if it'll ever be. It would def be a rad release to have on a new up coming label, but our main priority, is new material...Later on In the fall, No front teeth will do the euro pressing of "totally jawesome"

things are looking up for us. We're hoping to get picked up by a booking agent. Yes, we're sorta tired of doing all the bookings ourselves, and would love to just be an opening support band for bigger bands. So Hopefully these new releases will get us more exposure. We're also not playing Sacramento for a long time After September. We got 3 more local shows, and Thats it for us. We love Sacramento, but We can only do so much in one town. Feel like we've bored Sacramento, So time to disappear for awhile till we become fresh to everyone here.

Matt's been going to college, David and Jef have been doing Enlows (as much as we can) And David is constantly busy with Shire Road club...But be on the look out for us, and keep buying our up coming new released! hope to see you on tour! ;p

BOATS!-BOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-40582548840168899302010-03-23T20:47:00.000-07:002010-03-23T20:53:57.367-07:00Update on BOATS! life....Whats been new with Boats!? His 1st official show is This Thursday
@ Shire road club (5525 auburn blvd) w/Voodoo Glow Skulls.
We've finished guitars and vocals this past week. Now Just mixing it down to a "T"
before sending it off to Nate @ May cause dizziness records.
Art has been a bitch of a time. None of us have ideas, or can committee to anything.
But we're bout to just run wild and go with whatever.
We really wanted the full length out A.sap!

We're going on a small week tour up to Canada in May.
These short tours in rental cars have seemed way way more worth it.
All the shows are normally really good, and we don't come back with butterflies in our pockets...

We played with Angry Samoans Last week...Sorta. I had major Bass troubles, even when I got another bass, My cable (I had a swirly coil cable) kept unplugging. I popped a cute girl in the face...We had 12 songs on our set list, played probably 1 full song. Thats how much bullshit and troubles we had...totally sucked, totally got super amped, to play super horribly shitty!

We have some rad shows coming up with such bands: Dwarves, Tranzmitors, M.o.t.o, Sharp objects ect

We have a 10" coming out. its our 1st self titled cd...just on Vinyl. The enlows have a split cassette tape with the poonteens (davis) if you'd like to get one, $3 send payment to David11486@yahoo.com send money as a gift!

Anyway, stay tuned, we got records coming out, and hope everyone picks their copies up! :pBOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-34667199265168717872010-02-07T11:02:00.000-08:002010-02-07T11:03:24.090-08:00UPDATE: February 2010we found distro that has a copy of out out of print 7" SUMMER VACATION! It was a rainy day, we got an impala Rental car. Not The most comfy car we've had. They wanted $1,000 for the ford flex since its more in demand around winter time/holidays...So we settled for a cheap ass car...With No insurance, or underage fees. We got to La early...Of course, being first day of tour, I start freaking out and having a panic attack. Already contemplating canceling tour and going home. We've been gone for a max of 5hrs, if that! We stayed at my friend Alisha's cute apartment in Echo Park. Just a few miles away from The venue. We played project infest 1st night. It was located in South Central...Probably the only white people in the area, and they were all punks...It took awhile for the bands to show up...which made me stress more, without the bands, we'd have had no gear. Since it was the 1st day of the new year, I didn't know if we'd have a suck show or a rad show...Than a shit load of people started coming out, the band showed up...one or two might have not shown up, but we had more then plenty enough bands. The sound wasn't the best, the crowd was 50/50 with being crazy/mellow. There was a nice bon fire outside...Kids were moshing in rolling chairs, went back to Alisha's ate some soup called it a night.

San Diego: Got in Around 3ish...Went Straight my good friend Rhonda's house. Her and I caught up a little since I hadn't seen her since 7th grade. she recommended a good Vegan restaurant, we ate good and than her and I went to 24hr fitness. I was a pussy, and she totally out worked me..I was done within an hour, and she wanted to keep going. After that we went to the show. The show went over really well. once again, was being pestimistic, thinking the show would suck since we only had good shows there when Prima Donna played them. Junglefever (Ex-wild weekend) Was outrageously awesome. During our set, I pointed out how the bass played said I was cute when we played with them in San francisco with The girls, And I mention how I got so drunk I shit myself, without even really shitting myself...awkward.

Phix: We stopped at Apples bee's half way to Phix. They didnt have any veggie burgers so we didn't eat good in the neighborhood so we went straight to chilli's after ordering a free sprite. Matt and I got black bean burgers and it turned out to be the main choice of food for the whole tour. We went close to everyday. It felt like the drive was forever. Went to Nate's 1st (May cause dizziness records) Met him for the 1st time after already putting two 7inches out on his label. Kinda nervous, wasnt sure how it was gonna turn out. But he was way rad and had an awesome pad with cute dogs! The show was so/so we had some gear trouble...My bass kept cutting out, and Matt played with butter fingers. Punk bunny hecka showed us up + they had guy on guy dick sucking action when they closed their set! Afterwards we watched "the hangover" at nates. It was actually way funny! I figured it'd be a total lame Bro flick like American Pie....The next day, we spent recording "my mother was right" music video...I dont know how the idea came about, and I felt like a total idiot making this stupid video at nates house...He walked beside us playing the ipod so we can sync play to the song..whatever.

Tucson: we played in a fuckin JUNK YARD!!! The show got canceled, we moved it last minute to this place called "The hangart" the building was to old and had a basement in it...so The dude doesnt do shows in it, scared of the floors caving in...So we played outside in what was a total junk yard. All kinds of shit around us...a good 60 kids came out on a Monday night, we had major fun and we stayed at our 1st couchsurfing house of the tour. We stayed with Brenda...she had an awesome house, furnished basement! Foosball table, Ping pong table, x-box and tons of food! she worked at 7am and didn't kick us out...we took our time, ate lunch and off to New Mexico.

Las Cruces Nm: got a speeding ticket. going 90 in a 70mile zone. The couchsurfer we we're staying with, had no heater, the room had one single mattress, a futon frame, with no futon...and he answered the door in "kiss my Irish ass" pj's...smoking what jef said was "bad weed"...It was super awkward, we def didnt want to stay here...Matt Han's and I left Jef while he smoked and was in the house alone with this stoner dude and his friends. He finally got the hint we we're ditching the place...We went to the club, met the owner, she was cool and said we could stay in the venue over night.... All the bands were super awkward bout letting us use their shitty gear...They all knew ahead of time we we're gonna use their gear, but all of the bands gave us the run around, we had to talk to like 8347834 band members to just get drums, bass and guitar amp...They tried dooping us last...After we played everyone was cool and less awkward..But than the girl goes on about how she got a "disturbing phone call" and her friend said the cops we're keeping an Eye on the place...so we could No longer stay there...whateve, I smelt bullshit on that...We ended up staying at The Marriot. Fuck it was so nice..It was cheap! Only $90 two king size beds, flat screen tv. Pullout couch bed and continental breakfast! The waffles we're in the shape of Texas!

San Antonio tx: The drive always fuckin sucks. We hit a gas station that was a single person bathroom, but it totally had two toilets next to each other with no stalls! so matt and I pee'd together...We got to my friend Devan's apartment...She bought Little heaters so we'd be warm, but than my friend Amber (who has a super rich nice house) said we could stay at her place..I felt bad, but we ended up going to Ambers...The show got moved, we found out last minute, but it was only moved next door. A good amount of people came out! I was suprised! SA always sucked for us, this show was rad! went back to Ambers and watched "law man"...So tight

Houston tx: Got to John from Teenage kicks house played with his Pug "yoa!" and off to chillis..He hooked matt and I up with Their full length and 7inch! BOATS! even got a thank you in them! tight...It was freezing balls in houston! 19 degrees outside! fuck! so cold. The show was alright, we shoulda played 1st, most the cool punk kids took off after the 1st band even though they were in the band...We also got to see a Beatles cover band down the road before hand! so tight.

Austin tx: We stayed at Matt's Dads house. He broke a string the night before, so Just matt and I went to guitar center and starbucks together. Our little date...Matt's dad was cooking for us. We told him we're vegetarian. So he asked, "so you don't eat meat?....can you have chicken noodle soup?"....I was pretty sketched on dinner after that, but it was good...We played a pizza place called the parlor. We go free pizza, so that also made up for our dinner...We got stuck playing last (what the fuck local bands! u dont stick a small touring band last!!!!!!...we know u dont wanna play last when u come to sac and on tour! it fuckin blows!!!) the show had to be over by 11 and the 2nd band didnt end till like 11:15...the owner was cool and let us play. we kept it short and the show ended up super fun!

Denton tx: I think we lost touch with the super cool bands of denton, or they just dont like us...We couldnt get Teenage cool kids or any rad bands to play with us...We drive up, and last minute the dude calls me and says the two local bands we got had to cancel! I call more bullshit on that! how do you wait till the last hour to tell us you guys cant play? It was a total waste of time, and gas to drive to denton to "NOT" play We had a place to stay, it was semi awkward, but least we had somewhere warm to stay! but it was a saturday!! prime night for a show and the venue was pissed! but thats what happend when you dont travel with gear,,In the morning this nice dude paco (who reminds me of Billy Bob thorton) when he talked bought a package deal from us and had breakfast. So it wasnt a total waste.

Lubbock tx: Another rad show, with another rad place to snooze.
Didn't go to the buddy holly grave or museum.

Albuquerque nm: cold as shit again, Huge venue with a huge stage and a huge backdrop banner and a crazy owner who wanted to book us a show in San Francisco with Social concern and final summation...call me crazy, but find it weird this guy is trying to set us up with a SF show with bands from our home town...I dont see it being a good show lol Couchsurfed, got good food late at night, and slept! we we're kicked out by 8pm!

Flagsfaff: we're getting closer to California, we're getting a little more lazy..ate chilli's played at studio 111. The show was 50/50 had to deal with one complicated guy who kept bugging me bout getting paid and than a band who was trying to stick us last, using their guitar player is sick as an excuse. Then they said they couldnt play, than in middle of our set they decided they we're gonna play...It was totally lame...But they were a totally rad fuckin band! it'd be siked on em coming to Sac...way good drummer!

La: Matt wanted to drive home that night, so we drove all day, waited in the car for 2-3hrs for the show to start. Got $2 margaritas with Rough Kids and than played...The show was super rad in a super small record store/art space...we watched 2 rough kids songs...fuck they are so good! And there was no pb&j fights! a major plus in the show!

SF: Jef like an idiot...goes to TACO bell when he gets home...we ate like kings all tour and he eats TB the 1st chance he gets! who throws up before leaving for the BAY? Jef does! so silly! The show wasnt packed, kinda a disappointment...But Sharp objects (dan of the briefs and members of the bodies) played...fuck! so good, our new fave band for sure! Kirk showed up as did punk rock joel and Spike (re-volts/Me 1st and the gimmie gimmie's) came out...so it was a fun show all and all...

Sac: tour return home show/Grand opening for shire road club w/Phenomenauts, Sharp objects! secretions & Baby! was worried no one was coming out for our return home, but more importantly the opening of the new all ages club! but than people showed up! over 200 paid, we had a super fun show, Sharp objects we're the best band (least i thought) that night. everyone was rad, and it reminded me, how though I sometimes complain, I do love Sacramento's music scene. It was rad seeing a shit load of our friends!BOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-69518962409588373032009-12-27T21:10:00.001-08:002009-12-27T21:14:29.819-08:00And we're Off On Friday!Starting The New Year off by touring!!! It's been awhile since we've (couch surfed) Cause of My Anxiety, I set up a lot of places to crash at/Hang out at on couchsurfing.com I'm pretty excited for this tour. Always antsy before we leave. I have no idea how these shows are gonna go over, if anyone is siked to see us, or if we're just gonna meet new people, or play to dead rooms to just the bands! But who knows! Han's is Joining us on tour, I'm way siked for him to be with us. It's always nice to have someone (not in the band) On tour with us....After tour we're gonna work on the full length! Im very very anxious to work on new songs & Record and Finally have a 12' record! Anyway, Just wanted to write a little, take a break from Spamming myspace and facebook.
Hopefully people enjoy reading these little post. Anyway hope everyone had a merry x-mas! a Safe new year and hopefully you spend a day of new years month with us while we're on tour.BOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-90752835032730356652009-11-29T16:37:00.000-08:002009-11-29T16:45:54.658-08:00Long Over Due!For an Update...What the fuck have we been doing?...Since getting back from tour In August. We've taken it easy, working on new songs. Our new 7inch will be in our hands this week! Pf Flyers sent us free shoes! Matt's Taking off to Tokyo Japan on Tuesday morning..David is going to college in Jan, right when we get back from our Texas tour. Jef is now a Kitchen Manager @ The Cozmic cafe...(He likes to cook....A lot!) After Our Texas Tour In January, we're gonna slow down...While David's going to school, we'll be working on new jams, and recording our full length...Hoping to Release it well before summer time...May cause Dizziness Records is putting it out...We're looking for a 2nd label to put up the other half and get more Distro...We're Considering a 2nd guitarist, but can't find Anyone rad or good enough (or bad enough) to join the band. We Tried our Buddy Wolfgang out, but he melted our faces with his leads...Dunno if we're ready to turn more into a rocking band with crazy guitar shreds, or keep it simple, shitty but catchy!
we'd secretly like Dan Of the briefs/Modern action/Sharp Objects to join the band, but That's just a wet dream that wont happen...

Anyway, Texas Tour in Jan! Our last for awhile...We'll be playing locally on the weekends, and near by cities, but nothing crazy after Jan, except for a possibly Europe tour in the summer!
If anyone would like to put us up in Jan Get a hold of us! ;p

Jan 1st- La @ Project infest
Jan 2nd- San Diego @ Radio Room
Jan 3rd- Phoenix az @ The Rogue
Jan 4th- Tucson az @ Dry River
Jan 5th- Las cruses @ The Equinox
Jan 6th- San Antonio tx @ rockbottom bar
Jan 7th- Houston tx @ The Mink
Jan 8th- Austin tx @ the parlor
Jan 9th- Denton tx @ Rubber gloves
Jan 10th- Lubbock tx - @ whiskey Dix
Jan 11th- Albuquerque nm @ Bleeding Eardrum
Jan 12th- Flagstaff az @ studio 111
Jan 13th- La @ echo curio
Jan 14th- San Francisco @ annies social club
Jan 15th- Sacramento @ Shire road club

BOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-44724344040275058502009-08-17T16:35:00.000-07:002009-08-17T17:48:26.573-07:00Tour coming to an End..We're in Lush Hollywood @ The Ramada Plaza Santa Monica blvd...My mom was suppose to come down and bailed last minute. She made a reservation and they we're gonna ding her for $140 if she canceled, so she splurged and just gave us the hotel for two nights...Nice! Anyway, Tour has been outrageously good...here's a recap of the events/shows!

Medford: We got our rental car, it was super tiny! So we upgraded to a Ford Flex..Cost Us $630 + $200 down deposit...but sooo worth it! we've been so comfortable. I got a lil baby panic attack as we got closer to Medford oregon. The weather for the majority of the trip was overcast, and pretty cold...I packed for a "summer" tour...I popped a xanax and relaxed in the car for awhile once we got to medford...The show ended up way surprising. A good amount of people came out, we made our gas back...During The hollowbodies set a fight broke out...The got the dude outside, and the singer was yelling threw the mic "dont you fuckin come back in here it'll be the last fucking thing you do!" So they start playing, and shortly the singer threw his guitar down and start brawl in the street! he kicked the dude three times in the head and the dude was flat knocked out for like 5mins! The idiot eventually woke up and wanted to fight again...what'a dummy! We stayed at Sierra vicious house and her mom gave Jef a Xanax! Jef took it and had some crazy dreams, as I did also and matt was kept up by the tv all night..In the morning, Went outside and ate some rasin toast right by Sierras huge Pot garden. Portland Oregon: We we're playing Club Satyricon that night...a venue most pdx kids don't wanna go to based off it being over priced..Oddly enough, Kids fuckin came out, the bill had nothing but good bands on it..Silent majority (outrageously good live) The Flip tops, Boats! The eegos & Mean Jeans...
Seattle: we we're gonna take off after Pdx show, ended up staying the night, but headed up in the morning. We got in early as planned and went to our friend Matt/s rich ass mansion. Ate some Pasta and off to the funhouse. Blue Ribbon boys opened and we're way way good...1st time I saw em they had a weird line up got outrageously drunk (which lived up to their name) and played way way sloppy! They had their shit down this night, it was way good! Than some other band played, no one knew who they we're and it was kinda awkward...Than we played and we used the pranks gear! fuck, we sounded so good! I love their gear! I felt we played alright, but The pranks killed...They we're so good. They ended up canceling the tour with us due to drummer problems, totally lame! So we only got to use their sweet ass gear 1 night! ugh!

Vancouver Bc: Our Buddy Matt ended up coming up with us, which I think was a good thing. Jef rode up with him. We got thru the border no problem. It was very quick and easy. We had all our merch + guitars in the back, I even asked the guy "That's it?" and we went on threw...Jef and Matt got pulled over, Jef thinks it was because of a suspicious dui...they searched matts brand ass new car, found nothing and let em thru also. We Played with The Tranzmitors that night. Holy fuck, My favorite band right now! They were so outrageously good, brought out over 200+ people, gave me a 7inch and a cd...Had nice nice gear for us to use..We really wanna put a split of some sort out with them. Also The Teeves played and they were way way rad. we stayed @ The guitar player from Zip guns house, and hit up breakfast in the morning.

Kamloops Bc: Everyone in vancouver pretty much warned us and wished us good luck on having a good show, little did they know the show was way way rad! This Dude Levon from Sound city Hooligans set the show up. We went to his house for dinner. Jef got steak, we got veggie hot dogs..We ate all the hotdog buns and his wife was asking where they were, and we so ate em all! whoa whoa whoa! awkward...We went and helped him load their gear and off to the venue. I got to use a sweet ass sun bass amp! We sounded good, and tons of kids came out and danced..Very good show for a sunday. We went back to levons, popped more xanax (we're Indoreced by them) And hit the road early for Calgary ab.

Calgary Ab: So we missed starbucks on the way to Calgary. I said, "it's cool...we'll just stop at the next one." Little did we know, there was 0 Starbucks! it was straight moutians we we're driving threw for like 8 hours! We got into Calgary and this girl set up an earlier all ages show at this place called "the tubby dog" It was a total rad 50'ish looking hot dog joint. We got free veggie doggs...They Had a Pb&J hot dog, which was a weenier, bun, pb&j and captin chrunch on the top...I said "oh hell naw!" Jef got the gripper, cause hes a barbarian, It had bun, dog, chilli, ham, fried egg and some other shit on it...It didn't look all that good either...Anyway girl who set it up, showed up...didnt acknowledge us for like an hour or so, so we weren't sure if we had gear, so it was kinda awkward...but it ended up working out and the show was WAY WAY FUN! This one punk girl oddly knew like every song we played! she sang and danced, we felt like green day 75! Afterwards we played a bar show...Ended up having to play last which we thought was gonna suck 2 dicks like it's 2006...But People stuck it out, and the show went over really fuckin awesome! Stayed at the dudes from the pissoffs house, did some laundry and hit up Missoula mt.

Missoula mt: Crossing the u.s border was way way easy! No hassle at all, and no backed up line...we expected Missoula to be way better but it wasnt a horrible show! we sold out of 7inches! Which totally sucked cause we didnt have any for spokane, but Nate sent us more to PDX! Missoula we ended up getting a hotel room and relaxing. We got shitty hotel breakfast in the morning, I choose all the sweet food, so wasn't feeling that good after.

Spokane wa: Everytime we go to spokane, we do the usual shit...we go down town and go on the silly Radio flyer slide...This time matt wanted to go on this stupid gondola ride. Jef and I weren't into paying to go on it, so Matt splurged got 1 adult ticket and 3 children tickets. I got a lil nervous, so I dropped a duke in the public park bathroom. There was this homeless dude in there, and while I was washing my hands we had an awkward conversation bout how the hand soap they had in the bathroom was kinda like laundry detergent. After I took my duce it was ride time!It was so fucking stupid and a waste of Matt's money. The girl seated us in the gondola and was like 3kids, yeah right! And then she called us "jerks" as she shut the gondolas door. I got a lil noxious thought I was gonna puke, but ended up not, the ride didnt go like anywhere, it was lame...we exchanged our canadian money. we had like $500 and it came out to $344..On top of it kinda being hard to exchange the money, they wouldnt take our looneys and tooneys, So we still have a shit load of Canadian coins. We went to the club and these like total bro punk bands from new york showed up in their van, and we just watched Law and order in our ford flex. The show was 50/50 it seemed pretty weak, but once we played we had a good amount of kids there to watch us! We stayed at Our BFF's Apartment that night, She took us to a bar which served $1 grilled cheese and than we watched "Life aquatic" I popped another xanax, during the night a lamp fell over almost hitting jefs face, but i was straight snoozing. Reah cooked us yummy breakfast, went to Empyrean and had some coffee.

Pdx: Went back to Portland, A show Colin set up fell threw so we emerged both shows into one. We went to Seve's right when we got into town to pick up more records that had been sent to us. Than Nick came with us to Laughing horse. We all hung out, the show turned out real good, we played good and had some nice gear..and sold more records. In the morning we did breakfast with Seve and left to Grants pass.

Grants Pass: whoa, The biggest let down of the whole tour. All our past shows had atleast 50-150 kids there...this night, 10 kids showed up. And half didnt have money to pay to get in..Not only has the trove gotten lamer, but they still treat bands like shit. They dont give you any money from the door, they even have you sign a piece of paper stating you're not getting paid, they are keeping it all and you can sell you're merch. Same Lame band hoped on the bill and said we could use their gear, and than they didn't let us...They had synchronized jumps and matching mesa boogies amps...cool right?..Than another band (who was suppose to headline) said we could use their gear but totally took our spot...meanwhile, while no one else was gonna show up at this show, they went let the other 5kids in the show for free, so we told em we we're gonna bounce and they understood...So we pulled a long hall to sacramento...and by "we" I mean jef, he drove the whole way home while Matt Jamie and I slept.

Sacramento: We spent the day at home, I ran errands got Starbucks (twice) And relaxed. We played The Refuge, A new all ages venue similar to Club retro down town. They had a sweet green room behind the stage up stairs that really made you feel like green day. Though they had the whole christian atmosphere, the venue was pretty rad. Not horrible strict, and had a great sound man! We played good, and sold a lot of our 7inches! We ended up having to call Nate again to send us more 7inches! we're almost fully sold out!!!

Hollywood: The drive took forever, it really didnt, just always feels like a long drive. I totally get anxiety in this city, I freak out when im hear, we checked into our swanky hotel and off to The knitting factory. We havent played a good show there for awhile...We really try to only come down to La when Prima donna can play with us. They we're suppose to play this show, but didnt work out...The show was so so, It wasnt a horrible turn out, but wasnt as good as when prima donna plays with us, and we def didn't make as much $$...But we came back to the hotel, watched UFC cause we're secretly bro's and we've been hanging in the hotel all day today..

We're playing tonight with TUFF COOKIES in Hollywood, Tomorrow Fresno. I'll be seeing my dad and sisters whom i havent seen in like 7years. should be a little awkward. Than San francisco!

Return home show aug 29th with Phenomenauts @ club retro! come out!

BOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-69733903207356280702009-06-18T11:12:00.000-07:002009-06-21T18:39:34.214-07:00Sacramento News & Review Article: Boats!: Hey, hey, hey, bon voyage
Boats!: Hey, hey, hey, bon voyage
Boats! tour circles around most local bands, but not in upstate New York
By Derek Nielsen

Boats! set sail last Wednesday at The Press Club.

Before any interviews went down,
Boats! wanted to clear up certain rumors and misunderstandings that have been following them around. It’s not that the Sacramento-based punk trio is some kind of narcissistic image tyrant, they’ve just received some skewed portrayals in recent printed articles in certain daily papers. Guitarist Matt Leonardo, bassist David Hayden and drummer Jeff Melendez took me aside after a recent R5 Records set to set their record straight:

1. The band name is Boats!, with just one exclamation mark. Got it?
There’s Boats, the Boats, even Boats!!, the latter band I accidentally contacted about doing this interview (and apparently had the name first, although why the hell would two exclamation marks be part of your name; do boats get you that hyped?).

2. Boats! does not play “pusscore.”
Just for a laugh, the band members once got a family portrait of them taken at Sears. The photo has them against a white backdrop, and they’re wearing white clothes, flowers, big smiles and warm hugs. It’s friggin’ adorable.
They had no idea, however, that that picture would end up getting used pretty much every time someone wrote about them in print. “We look pretty lame,” bassist Hayden says. “I can totally see why so many people consider us pusscore.”

3. Boats! isn’t all about money.
Cash is not the driving factor in Boats!, despite the impression you’d get after reading their Sacramento Bee interview last summer. Income to cover touring and recording expenses—and maybe some food scrilla—is all the band wants. They didn’t start the band with the idea that they’d make a lot of money, as stated in said interview.

4. Boats! does stuff.
Rumors dispelled, Boats! are setting their sights forward: They have a Canadian tour lined up in August and a full U.S. tour this fall. Their new EP, Summer Vacation, also will drop this summer, distributed here by May Cause Dizziness Records and in the United Kingdom by No Front Teeth Records.
Leonardo is forthright in discussing how he wrote songs for the new record: “I’ll listen to a ton of Clorox Girls, Black Dahlias and Autistic Youth, then stop listening to them for a while. Then I’ll sit down and play something that sounds like that, but put different words over it, and that’s how Boats! songs get written.”

5. Boats! will draw the line—and that line is somewhere in upstate New York.
While they are psyched on the new release, touring has always been what drives Boats! They’ve already logged tens of thousands of miles and have the stories to prove it.
“We can’t go back to Albany,” Hayden explains. The story goes: Last summer, the day after the Fourth of July, a road-weary and mildly apathetic Boats! arrived in Albany to play at some locals’ party.
“They were pretty nice, but a little too crazy for us,” Leonardo continues. The dude from the door handed Boats! a wad of cash while they set up. Cool.
“[Then] we start playing, and the crowd starts shooting fireworks at us!” Leonardo recalls.
Not really down to catch a Roman candle to the face, Leonardo told the crowd to stop, otherwise they’d stop playing. “They told us ‘Fuck you, we’re punk rock from upstate! San Francisco is that way, fags!’” he says. It was just too nuts, so Boats! stopped playing.
“They still shot fireworks at us while we loaded up our stuff,” he says.
The band desperately tried to get organized and leave before the door manager came back looking for his money. But sure enough, a fat, sweaty, inebriated dude approached wielding a baseball bat. But after muscling Leonardo out of the money, the doorman then threw Hayden on the hood of the van and tried to make out with him.
The drunken crowd sang the chorus to “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” as the band sped away. “Some people from there even left us some comments on MySpace saying, ‘Hey, you guys should totally come back to Albany … not!!!’” Hayden laughs.

Wait, was that three exclamation marks?
________________________________________________
Boats! play with Xenophobes and Botox Party on June 25, 9 p.m.; $5; 21 and over. Friday morning, went to Hertz got our rental car...We got the Maza5 this time

Stopped by the bodyshop (old strip club) my moms bf bought it and is turning it into an all ages club. totally rad, and see good things comming from it. came home, made myself a tuna fish sandwitch, screen printed 5 Large shirts, and got everything else we'd need for the weekend ready. We hit the road by 1ish. Later than we expected, but still made good time getting to Hollywood. The drive isnt that long, but sometimes feels a whole hella of a lot longer each time we make the trip....

Pulled into Hollywood around 7ish, just enough time to check in, and work out our gear arrangements with TORA! TORA! TORA! Ryan mudd missunderstood my e-mail and thought we only needed to bar a guitar amp! here's where the awkwardness starts....His band had no idea, and while talking to their bassist, I threw out, "it's cool if I still use you're bass amp right?" he had the confused looked, "i didn't know you needed to barrow my amp." but he said it'd be cool But than Rough kids were short of gear also, and than it turned SUPER AWKWARD. tora tora tora wasnt cool with it, which is understandable, but they didn't leave it at that..They kinda kept bringing it up, and how it was bullshit they'd ask last min, totally understandable again, but it just made it more awkward and now there was some major tension going on...Tora! Tora! tora! played 1st, I was impressed, Ryan played guitar way way better than I was expecting.

Afterwards rough kids played..I was totally facebooking it during one of their songs and ethan totally karate kicked my phone out of my hand...I thought my phone was broken for a hot min, which I just bought it monday..fuck, but it turned out to be fine...Than Between the drummer and bassist of tora tora tora things were flying on and off stage! My Pb&J sandwhich I had made ended up getting throwing at each other, till Ethan (rough kids) Was singing, grabbed the mic and chucked it at Bassist of tora tora toras head, jumped off stage with his guitar still in hand, landing on bassist head punching away, and all of a sudden a huge brawl breaks out in the room...the rest of Rough kids dove off stage to join the fight..Fists finally stopped flying, security made their way into the room and shut the show down. we we're one song away from playing our set! LAME! so we spent sorta a lot of money on a rental car, and gas to not play la...

As everyone was packing their gear...Ryan mudd hears about the fight, ask's who cause it, went up and started throwing punches! Another fight breaks out in the lobby of the knitting factory in front of All these Hip hop people...GO FIGURE! The hip hop show in the bigger roomer, where guys were being patted down for weapons was way more tame than the silly punk show we had...

Anyway, shit cleared up and we went to a party we we're trying to play..We didn't end up playing, but the BASSIST of the donnas was there, and we we're totally hanging with her. We we're kinda tired, and over the night, so we went to kirks house. I ended up waking up, running to the bathroom, asked kirk if anyone was in there and told him, "im gonna throw up!" turn around start running to the front door, hear him "this way this way!" turn back around, run out the back door and start throwing up all over his backyard...After i finally got it out, I went back to bed, but I kept waking up every other hour throwing up. I had no food in my system so it was straight gross stomic acid. At 6 in the morning, I dunno if it was me over exsaturadting, or not, but I felt like i was going into shock or something...My hands felt like they feel asleep, only they felt like I was being electricuted, and the feeling moved into my stomach and legs...

We decided to cut our looses short, and head home instead of spending even more money to get to flagstaff and back to Los angeles...Plus with all the puking I did, wasn't really in the mood to drive hella far to play...so we came home, Hertz is closed on sunday, cant even return the car till tomorrow (lame)....But all in all, with all the bullshit that happend this weekend, we had fun..Hope everyone in tora tora tora and rough kids are alright, and hopefully next time we actually play before shit like that happends lol
BOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-25783286054869977452009-06-05T10:58:00.001-07:002009-08-08T09:15:16.776-07:00BOATS! Matt Leonardo (vocals/guitar), David Hayden (bass), and Jeff Melendez (drums) play punk that has influences of everything from 70s bands like Buzzcocks to more current bands like The Briefs. Boats! keep it short, simple and snappy with most songs clocking in at around two minutes.

Boats! have toured relentlessly since their first show in August 2007. They played nearly 100 shows in 2008 alone. The band’s strong work ethic seems to be paying off this year with a 2009 SAMMIE nomination for "Outsanding Punk/Hardcore Band" and an upcoming release on No Front Teeth Records/May Cause Dizziness. The band hopes to release their 10 inch album in June.

I caught Boats! live in action at R5 Records on Saturday, May 2. Although Saturday’s lineup centered on Pansy Division singer Jon Ginoli’s book read and acoustic set, Boats! held their own following Ginoli’s performance.

As Boats! sailed through their set, the band’s popularity was plain to see as fans shouted out song requests and sang along to songs like “Motorcycle Weekend,” “Heart of Gold,” and “My Mother was Right.” (My mother was right/I shoulda stayed with you/Well now my boat has gone to sea/I wish you still want to be with me.)

As I watched the bassist dance around the stage, I was reminded of Green Day’s bassist Mike Dirnt in both sound and movement. Also similar to Green Day are Leonardo's vocals, which sometimes mimic a bad (but good for singing) British accent. Still, Boats! are no Green Day copycats. They have been influenced by the greats in power pop/pop punk and have created a sound and image that is best described in one word simple, punctuated word: Boats!

Hear Boats! It was rainy the whole trip up...And David being the Gerber baby that he is, started catching a lil Anxiety. We got to The HQ (house that we played) around 7:30ish..Greeter the house mates, talked to this guy who kept trying to remember, and how he screwed us over on a Cute Lepers show we we're Suppose to play but ended up not happening..Anyway Show didnt start till 8:30, 1st band was a total metal band that wasn't all that good...Didn't look like all that many people there. After their set it was our turn, but before we played this Kid Austin who lived at the house went around asking people for a $5 donation. He was TOTALLY calling everyone out... "The show is $5 do you got any money? Girl: No. Austin: we'll okay this isnt a show so Have a goodnight night Sweetheart... Austin, Hey man you got $5 this isnt a free show. Bro guy: i'll give you $5 if I decide to stay at the show, I've only got $20. Austin: Well this isn't a Bro show for you and all your bro friends man, have a goodnight bro" Bro..walks off past us, looking a lil mad bro: "man you need to calm the fuck down"...I couldnt help but enjoy myself when he called the bro out, specially when the bro was claiming not to be a bro...But was totally a "BRO!" We barrowed Royal Nobles gear. They forgot cymbols so they had to go run and get em, Meanwhile...we got our shit togather, and the basement litteraly had only 4 people in it. Kinda thinking it was gonna be suck down for us. The cymbols arrived, and the BASEMENT PACKED! I probably over exstaurate, but it looked like 80-100 people. The Kids danced, and enjoyed our set. We got paid well...Watched Royal noble, They were rad, I dug their drummers style...After them, we hit the road quick, and Hit some snow on the way home...Was a little worried being that we we're in a tiny toyota corlla.

Last night May 2nd Saturday. We played R5 Records. The Enlows Opened (David's 1st show with them) The set was good good! And was a lot of fun playing guitar for a change. Jon from Pansy division quickly Jumped on stage after ourset and Did his book reading and accoustic set. Both I was a lil nervous for considering you have to watch your P's & Q's at R5 records. But it went over well...I posted the event on several sacramento gay message boards. And Half the crowd was a gay crowd. Faces we've never seen before. I highly enjoyed seeing some of the gay community out at the show, and they stuck around for our set...Of course sacramento being sacramento, we played and the crowd just stood and watched and looked bored, but they stuck around and thats all that matters! It was a fun night, and to end it off, we went to the doghouse where Papa tom ended up having to bitch slap some drunken idiot who got out of line.BOATS!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12100216664696412674noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4832594148010561149.post-56674815351127475972009-03-29T13:14:00.000-07:002009-04-17T12:34:22.936-07:00BOATS!
